Irish Georgian Society London – Seeking Voluntary Events Co-ordinator

The vision of the Irish Georgian Society is to conserve, protect and foster an interest and a respect for Ireland’s architectural heritage and decorative arts (from all periods).

The London branch is looking for an enthusiastic volunteer who would be pleased to take over the Events Co-ordinator role.

We arrange numerous (c.16-20) events each year, including lectures, walking tours, historic houses visits, dinners, parties and weekend visits. We learn about historic buildings/ places and host social events in historic settings. Most importantly, we aim to have fun with like-mind people.

In addition, any money raised from these events goes towards grant aiding conservation works of historic buildings in Ireland.

Events Co-ordinator

The main role of the events co-ordinator is to oversee the events for the year, liaise and manage event organisers as necessary, control the Eventbrite system, and organise a small number of events a year.

We are looking for someone who is:

  • Really organised
  • Very efficient
  • and somewhat tech savvy

The time required for the job varies through the year, ranging from a handful of emails during the week to more concentrated time around the period of the events listing production (which takes a few days). It also requires attendance at 4 committee meetings a year, which take place on weekday evenings.

Start Date: January 2020.

CIfA, the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists, is looking for a director from outside the profession.

  • The role: Lay director on the Board of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists
  • Responsible to: Chair of the Board of Directors
  • Responsibilities: To bring new perspectives to the Board from outside the archaeological profession and to assist the Board in their duty to promote high professional standards and strong ethics, maximising the value that archaeologists bring to society and bringing recognition and respect to the profession
  • Commitment: 12-18 days per year, including six Board meetings
  • Skills required: Skills in governance, team building, strategic growth in the UK and overseas, ambassadorship
  • Term: 1 year initially, to be extended to 3 years on review
  • Remuneration: Travel and expenses only

Architectural History (SAHGB Journal) seeks Book Review Editor

Architectural History, the journal of the SAHGB, publishes original, peer-reviewed research on buildings, the built environment, the history of architectural theory, and architectural historiography in all places and periods.  Published by Cambridge University Press, it is one of the leading academic journals for the history of architecture in the world.

The editorial team seeks a new book review editor.  You will work closely with the lead editor, the deputy editor, and five other team members in the production of the journal, which is issued once each year.  The position involves: commissioning reviews (roughly 10 per volume, 750-1000 words each), reviewing submissions, liaising with authors, editing manuscripts for style and content, and traveling to editorial meetings (2-3 per year).  Experience in academic writing and editing is essential.

The role represents an exciting opportunity to help contribute to the future success of the journal.  Like all roles in the SAHGB, it is voluntary.  Please submit a statement of interest, along with a CV to architecturalhistory@sahgb.org.uk by March 15, 2018.

VOLUNTEERING: Cathedral Projects Support Panel

The Association of English Cathedrals would like to hear from those with an interest in cathedrals and the time and relevant specialist skills and experience to serve as volunteer expert members on the newly created Cathedral Projects Support Panel.

Serving on the Support Panel will offer a unique opportunity to assist cathedrals, some of England’s greatest buildings, to devise realistic briefs for major projects, helping to scope out projects and identify project elements, point out potential problem areas and recommend how to overcome them, share wisdom and contacts, and advise on need for specialist advice and input.

The role of a Panel member is voluntary but reasonable expenses will be paid.

Allchurches Trust has provided funding for an initial two year pilot project.

Expressions of interest are invited from competent and experienced specialists with skills and experience that could assist cathedrals devise realistic projects.

Conservation Volunteer Opportunity at Beams

CONSERVATION VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY AT BEAMS

From time to time BEAMS has opportunities for entrants in the field of historic building conservation to join the small team based at Hertford Castle and gain work-based experience.

Such an opportunity has arisen in October 2017.

We are looking for an able and keen candidate with an interest in architecture, the history of UK historic buildings and places, archival research, heritage planning and conservation. Our clients are usually the owners of historic buildings in Herts, Bucks, Essex and nearby part of London and/or Local Planning Authorities in the same areas.

BEAMS is the trading arm of the Hertfordshire Buildings Preservation Trust.

This is a voluntary, unpaid position but the conditions are flexible.  We are particularly interested in hearing from persons currently on post-graduate courses of study or recently qualified in a relevant field.  Residence in Hertfordshire, Essex or nearby parts of London would be an advantage.

London Branch Membership Mentor

We are really keen to appoint a much-needed Membership Mentor to assist existing
Affiliate members with the process of upgrading to Full membership and any new
potential members who may wish to apply for Full membership.
Ideally you will currently be employed or semi-retired and will have joined the Branch
during the last five years, so you are familiar with the updated membership form and
competencies. You will be asked to mentor a maximum of four applicants per year to
coincide with Membership Committee deadlines.

Volunteer Conservation Cleaner

STRAWBERRY HILL House & Garden

Role Summary:
Volunteer conservation cleaners will assist the house team in the maintenance and preventative conservation of this historic property. Tasks will consist of regular hoovering, dusting of intricate architectural features as well as using other methods of conservation cleaning to preserve Horace Walpole’s gothic villa for future generations.
The work will vary greatly depending on things going on in the house, but volunteers will work independently or in a small team and should be willing to help out with whatever conservation needs are required.

Person Specification:
Prior experience with basic knowledge of conservation would be very helpful.
Interest in conservation of historic buildings.
Reliable and enthusiastic in the role
Able to volunteers as part of a team or independently
Reporting to: Laura Teale, Property Operations Manager
Commitment: 1 day per week

Working Holiday 2016 : Restore a historic fort on île de Cezon, Brittany

Participants are sought for a working holiday organised by REMPART, a union of 170 heritage organisations throughout France.

The working holiday provides opportunity to take part in the restoration of the remains of the Vauban Military Fort on the magnificent île de Cezon, c. 30km from the historic maritime city of Brest. Originally built in the late 1600s to protect the city from British forces, the fort was expanded during the reign of Napoleon III and occupied by Germans forces during the Second World War.

Participants will be part of a team working on the fort’s stonework and tasks will include stone removal, cleaning and masonry. Accommodation will be in dormitories inside the fort and participants will require a sleeping bag, pillow and torch. The site is ecologically-protected, with rainwater showers, etc, and all products used must be fully biodegradeable. There will be opportunity to explore the surrounding area, sample the local cuisine and enjoy activities including swimming.

Dates:  4-15 July 2016; 18-29 July; 1-12 August; 15-26 August.
Price:  215€ (approx. £170, based on exchange rate on 13/06/2016)
