Projects that demonstrate a viable and sustainable long-term use for buildings at risk are particularly encouraged to apply. There are two award categories:\u00a0<wbr \/> (a) project led by a not-for-profit developer (\u2018community focussed\u2019) or (b) project led by a private sector owner or developer (\u2018commercial\u2019)\u00a0<wbr \/> \u00a0<wbr \/>.<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/p>\n<p class=\"ox-8aa50ca4d0-MsoNormal\"><u><\/u>\u00a0Assessment criteria include<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"ox-8aa50ca4d0-m_2274426382144010985MsoListParagraph\">The re-use needs to be <b>appropriate and viable<\/b><u><\/u><u><\/u><\/li>\n<li class=\"ox-8aa50ca4d0-m_2274426382144010985MsoListParagraph\">New work should be <b>distinguishable from the original <\/b>without detracting from it<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/li>\n<li class=\"ox-8aa50ca4d0-m_2274426382144010985MsoListParagraph\">Weight will given to the <b>survival, re-use or retention of features, <\/b>and<b> interpretation should be provided<\/b> if it helps the understanding of the building where the original function is not self-evident<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/li>\n<li class=\"ox-8aa50ca4d0-m_2274426382144010985MsoListParagraph\">There should be some <b>evidence of attention to energy efficiency<\/b> in the conversion<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/li>\n<li class=\"ox-8aa50ca4d0-m_2274426382144010985MsoListParagraph\">There should be a <b>future maintenance programme<\/b>.<u><\/u><u><\/u><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The deadline for submissions in 31 May 2017.<\/p>\n<p>More information about the awards, including the assessment criteria and a downloadable application form, <a href=\"http:\/\/industrial-archaeology.org\/aia-awards\/best-adaptive-reuse-of-an-industrial-building-barib\/\">can be found here<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"ox-8aa50ca4d0-m_2274426382144010985MsoListParagraph\">\n<p class=\"ox-8aa50ca4d0-MsoNormal\"><u><\/u><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The awards are for building conversions that strike that tricky balance between the practicality of their new function and the readability of their old.
