ONE Full-time Masters Studentship Award starting September 2016. Closing date: 15/7/16. The award linked to the AHRC Heritage Consortium will provide funding to a high quality applicant. The funding will allow you to focus on developing high level skills and competencies for research and professional practice. The studentship will cover the course fee and provide an attractive maintenance award (£8,933*). The award can be used to fund a place on any of our Masters programmes: MA Archaeology; MSc Archaeological Prospection; MSc Archaeological Sciences; MSc Human Osteology and Palaeopathology; MSc Forensic Archaeology & Crime Scene Investigation.

THREE fully funded PhD Studentships starting October 2016 – £14,296* stipend for each in 2016/17. Closing dates: PhD #1 – 30/5/16; PhDs #2, #3 – 17/6/16

PhD #1 – Visualising the Crucible of Shetland’s Broch Building (AHRC-funded SCHC CDP studentship)
This PhD is a collaborative doctoral partnership with Historic Environment Scotland and Shetland Amenity Trust. The project will compare three major multi-phase Broch sites on Shetland (Mousa, Old Scatness and Jarlshof) reviewing original excavation archives and records associated with site monitoring, while capturing new 3D site/ landscape data (3D laser scans, photogrammetry). As a CDP Student you qualify for an additional £550 stipend payment per year. You will have an archaeology qualification, with a demonstrable interest in the archaeology of the Northern Isles and knowledge/ experience in 3D digital documentation practice in archaeology.

PhD #2 – Seismic mapping (linked to ERC-funded Europe’s Lost Frontiers project)
This PhD will involve the mapping and characterisation of the landscape of Doggerland. You will investigate the process of interpreting seismic geophysics of the North Sea bed and enabling it to be used as part of a series of computer simulations that will explore its floral, faunal and human inhabitants. You will have experience of either geophysics or large-scale mapping, ideally both. You will also have an archaeology qualification, ideally with some emphasis on prehistory.

PhD #3 – Computer simulation (linked to ERC-funded Europe’s Lost Frontiers project)
This PhD will involve using seismic, environmental and sedimentary DNA data within computer simulations of the landscape of Doggerland. This will focus on the natural resources available to hunter-gatherer communities and the processes involved with the Mesolithic-Neolithic transition.
You will have some experience of computer programming and either archaeology or anthropology.

Heritage Science Scholarship

Historic Royal Palaces (HRP) announces Heritage Science Scholarship for black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) candidates

Historic Royal Palaces (HRP) is funding a scholarship for black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) candidates accepted onto the UCL MRes in Science and Engineering in Art, Heritage and Archaeology (SEAHA).  HRP particularly welcome BAME applicants as a currently under-represented group both in heritage science and within their organisation: they believe that there should be better representation of diversity in this sector.

Over the two-year period of the scholarship, this opportunity will involve spending time studying towards the MRes SEAHA at UCL Institute for Sustainable Heritage and with the HRP Conservation and Collection Care department at Hampton Court Palace, developing skills in the area of heritage science.

PhD Studentship in Architecture, Health Science, and Biomedical Engineering

Applications are invited for a Government funded Interdisciplinary PhD studentship
tenable in the Faculty of Art, Design, and the Built Environment at the Belfast Campus
(jointly with the Faculties of Life and Health Sciences, and of Computing and
Engineering).

This PhD proposal examines the civic issues and efficacy of integrating assistive
technology solutions in architectural design for ageing populations as more holistic and
flexible processes. It examines the barriers and benefits for integrating devices and
spatial considerations at early stages of planning and development, and how these
environments are envisaged by the healthcare professionals, users, and development
stakeholders who influence the direction and funding of research/production in this fast
growing area.

Applications will be considered on a competitive basis with regard to the candidate’s
qualifications, skills experience and interests relative to the proposal, and will be invited
to comment on the project scope and key issues at interview. Successful candidates will
enrol as of 1 October 2016, on a full-time programme of research studies leading to the
award of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.

Members – Historic Environment Scotland

Appointment of Members to the Board

Scottish Ministers are looking to appoint up to two Members to the Board of Historic Environment Scotland (HES).

HES is the new lead organisation for the historic environment in Scotland.  A new public body which is also a registered Scottish charity, HES  role is to investigate, care for and promote Scotland’s historic environment and to manage its collections as a national resource for reference, study and research.

As the successor to Historic Scotland, HES is one of the major operators of visitor attractions in Scotland, including Edinburgh and Stirling Castles. HES has a subsidiary trading company,  HES Enterprises.  HES  also  has responsibilities as a regulator  and as a grant distributor, as well as an important  role in promoting the development of skills  , both traditional  and modern.

We are seeking applications specifically from people with experience of finance, audit and risk who want to contribute to the development of this new organisation and feel they have the skills required.

This appointment will be for up to four years.

Young Church Architect of the Year

CHURCH ARCHITECTURE AWARDS OPEN TO NOMINATIONS

The National Churches Trust and the Ecclesiastical Architects and Surveyors Association are inviting entries for their 2016 church architecture awards and for a new ‘Young Church Architect of the Year‘ award.

New church buildings and new designs in church alterations or extensions can be entered for The Presidents’ Award. The Presidents’ Award is awarded on behalf of the National Churches Trust’s Joint Presidents, the Archbishops of Canterbury and York and the Ecclesiastical Architects and Surveyors Association (EASA) President. The architects responsible for the winning project will receive the Presidents’ Award paten and chalice. The winning church or chapel will receive a £500 prize.

Grants to support archaeological work in the City of London

CoLAT Grants

John Schofield, Secretary of the City of London Archaeological Trust (CoLAT), invites applications for small- to medium-sized grants to support archaeological work and related documentary research in the City and its environs, as in previous years. The grants will be for one year only from 1 April 2017, with a deadline for applications (with required references) of Friday 23 September 2016; CoLAT will meet to decide the grants in early December.

NHTG-HLF bursary training opportunities: Site-based schemes

The National Heritage Training Group (NHTG) has been awarded £779,200 funding by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to provide high quality, work-based training and skills development opportunities to equip people for a career in the built heritage sector, with the bursaries organised across the country by regional heritage coordinators.

The National Heritage Training Group’s (NHTG) bursary scheme is all about finding passionate, enthusiastic and dedicated people to be trained to work on England’s traditional buildings.  Overall, there will be 30 variable-length educational bursaries offered, working on live heritage sites across England.

Training and live site-based work experience is the largest element of this Project. Opportunities will include:

  • 30 variable-length traditional building craft skills bursary placements
  • 100 delegates attending a 2 day course to achieve the Level 3 Unit Award in Understanding Repair and Maintenance of Traditional Pre-1919 Buildings
  • 10 Heritage Specialist Apprenticeships
  • 20 Level 3 NVQ Diplomas in Heritage Skills
  • 10 Mentors to train enabling them to pass on their skills and knowledge to develop the abilities of less experienced trades people.

The placements are each of 6 or 12 months, with imminent and differing closing dates, and include:

  • a specialist Historic Building Conservation company, 12-month placement with Carrek Ltd based on historic projects in the South West of England.. Application closing date: 27/05/16.
  • a Historic Building Conservation company 12-month placement with Oxford Lime Mortar Ltd specialising in lime mortars and associated materials working on historic projects within a 30mile radius of Oxford. Application closing date: 27/05/16.
  • a 12 month placement with a specialist Historic Building Conservation company, McCurdy & Co Ltd based on historic projects in the South of England. Application closing date: 20/06/16.
  • a 6-month placement to learn Pargeting (lime plaster modelling) and many other built heritage skills, working with Anna Kettle Design, an experienced Pargeter and historic building conservation specialist practitioner. The placement will be based at a 17th Century timber frame farmhouse near Bedford, in the South of England.

Georgian Group Architectural Awards

The Georgian Group’s Architectural Awards, sponsored by international estate agents Savills and now in their fifteenth year, recognise exemplary conservation and restoration projects in the United Kingdom and reward those who have shown the vision and commitment to restore Georgian buildings and landscapes. Awards are also given for high-quality new buildings in Georgian contexts and in the Classical tradition. The 2016 Awards will be presented by Loyd Grossman, CBE at the RIBA in early November 2016.

Entries for the 2016 awards are now being invited. There is no entry fee. Schemes must be in the United Kingdom, Isle of Man or Channel Islands and must have reached practical completion between 1st January 2016 and 1st August 2016. For the purpose of the Awards, the term ‘Georgian’ embraces the period of classical ascendancy in Britain and is taken to mean 1660–1840. The award categories are: Restoration of a Georgian Country House; Restoration of a Georgian Interior; Restoration of a Georgian Building in an Urban Setting; Reuse of a Georgian Building; Restoration of a Georgian Garden or Landscape; New Building in the Classical Tradition; New Building in a Georgian Context.

The Ecclesiastical Insurance bursary will provide up to £20,000 for a future MSc Sustainable Heritage student to cover fees and a stipend. UCL Masters Scholarships

The Bartlett, UCL’s Faculty of the Built Environment, offers 20 scholarships for MSc, MRes, MA and MArch students, each worth £5,000, to be used as partial fee remittance for study.

The deadline for receipt of all scholarship applications is 16.00 (UK time) on Friday 20 May 2016. All applicants will be informed of the outcome by email in early August 2016.

Travel Grant: building heritage skills through travel

This grant award scheme is for young craftspeople with an interest in religious heritageconservation wanting to travelto increase their expertise and knowledge, ultimately benefitting heritage skills in the UK.

Up to two awards of between £500 and £1000 will be granted in June each year to young craftspeople showing the most innovative and enthusiastic approach to learning heritage skills, and those with the clearest idea of how the development of their knowledge and future career in heritage will benefit from the award. more….
