Trustees, Stanley People’s Initiative

The trustees of The Stanley People’s Initiative are working to regenerate and safeguard the impressive early twentieth-century, grade II listed Stanley Halls, located in the heart of South Norwood, Croydon.

We will open them as public halls, reinstating the grand concert hall, art gallery and community rooms, and create an enterprise hub. A regenerated Stanley Halls could offer employment, training, community development, entertainment and an urgently needed focal point in the area.

We are looking for individuals with experience in business management, property development, events and volunteer management and fundraising.

Trainee Heritage Officers

The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS) is currently seeking to recruit three Trainee Heritage Officers based at our Head Office, John Sinclair House, Edinburgh.

This traineeship has been created a as part of the Heritage Lottery Fund supported Skills for the Future programme to enable people from a wide variety of backgrounds to develop their skills for future employment within the heritage sector. The project based at RCAHMS – ‘Building Curatorial and Learning Skills for the Heritage Sector’ – will provide 40 traineeships over six years, focussing on a series of inter-related skills involving the documentation and dissemination of archive collections as well as site-based heritage education.

The Mausolus Essay Prize

The MMT have launched a call for entries for the Mausolus Essay Prize, with a deadline of 30 April 2015

To encourage the study and appreciation of historic monuments, the Mausolea and Monuments Trust (MMT) is inviting entries for the Mausolus Essay Prize, to be presented in 2015 in memory of our late Fellow Thomas Cocke, a former Chairman of the MMT, who was passionately interested in the evolution of church architecture. The £250 prize and publication in the journal of the Mausolea and Monuments Trust will be awarded by a distinguished judging panel whose members include Carolyn Cocke, Chair of the Mausolea and Monuments Trust, Fellows Roger Bowdler and Gavin Stamp, Gabriel Byng, editor of Mausolus, and Frances Sands, of Sir John Soane’s Museum.

Essays may be on any subject relating to mausolea or monuments, including, but not limited to, head stones, ledger stones, cemeteries, churchyards and other types of memorial. They may concern objects in Britain or abroad, of any time period. Essays must be no longer than 3,000 words (not including footnotes and bibliography) and can be illustrated with up to five figures. The footnotes and bibliography must be in ‘Chicago’ style. The deadline is 30 April 2015 and entries should be sent to Dr Gabriel Byng.

Visiting Fellowships, Princeton-Mellon Initiative in Architecture, Urbanism, and the Humanities, 2015-2016

The Princeton-Mellon Initiative in Architecture, Urbanism, and the Humanities is pleased to announce three available fellowships for the 2015-16 academic year. There will be two Mellon Fellows hired for the entire year and one Distinguished Mellon Fellow brought to campus for a semester (which can be extended to a year’s residency with outside, non-Princeton support). Mellon Fellows may be from any discipline. We seek applicants with outstanding intellectual, literary, and visual talents who demonstrate an abiding interest in multi-disciplinary work focused on the intersection of architecture, urbanism, and the humanities.

Apprenticeships and Stone and other heritage crafts (UK)

QEST apprenticeship – worth up to £18,000 – and better still, these are now open to anyone 16 or over, and institutions can apply without having a named apprentice. The apprenticeship can run over a number of years.

This is the second year that the Heritage Crafts Association has worked with generous funders to produce a unique set of awards specifically for traditional crafts. And our funders have been even more generous this year; we have almost £100,000 (£99,500) in bursaries and awards which is the most there has ever been for heritage crafts.

The Luigi Micheletti Award

The Luigi Micheletti Award is focused on contemporary history and its scientific heritage, industrial and social development. This Award was established in 1996 by the Micheletti Foundation of Brescia and a leading expert on industrial archeology and museology Kenneth Hudson, for the recognition of excellence in the specific field of science and industry museums in Europe. They can participate in science museums, technical and industrial applications. Today’s Prize is open to history museums in the 20th century (social, political, military) to reflect the broader scope of activities of the Micheletti Foundation and is managed jointly by the Foundation and by the European Museum Academy .

Students taking a course that could lead to Technician Membership of ICE could apply for a QUEST Technician Scholarship.

QUEST offers scholarships worth £1,500 to students in further education (FE) studying for a civil engineering qualification which could lead to Technician Membership (TMICE) of ICE.

QUEST scholarships are associated with excellence and as well as receiving financial support of up to £1,500, successful scholars gain recognition of their abilities and potential from a highly respected international organisation, an achievement which looks great on a CV.

Georgian Group Architectural Awards

Entries are invited for the twelfth annual Georgian Group Architectural Awards, sponsored by Savills.

These unique awards, covering the United Kingdom, Channel Islands and Isle of Man, recognise excellence in the restoration of Georgian buildings. Awards are also given to the best new Classical building and to the best new building in a Georgian context.

SOAS Charles Wallace India Fellowship, 2014-2015

One fellowship is awarded annually by the SOAS South Asia Institute (SSAI) and the Charles Wallace India Trust to a scholar who has had no, or little opportunity, to conduct research outside India. The 3 month placement at SOAS, University of London should be taken predominantly during term-time (January–May).

The Canal & River Trust

The Canal & River Trust is the charity that cares for England and Wales’ legacy of 200-year-old waterways, holding them in trust for the nation forever.

The Trust is among the UK’s biggest charities, with responsibility for 2,000 miles of canals, rivers, docks and reservoirs, along with museums, archives and the country’s third largest collection of protected historic buildings.

As part of our commitment to the long-term maintenance and restoration of the waterways, we are looking to recruit 14 Waterways Heritage Trainees to be based around the country.

Volunteers sought

Sarahjayne Clements, the Royal Commission’s CBA Community Archaeologist, is looking for volunteers to interview for an oral histories project she is running in Swansea with the Young Archaeologist Club. They would like to record memories of the city and scan any old photographs that you might have. They are also interested in any First World War memories, photographs and memorabilia that you may have.

Birmingham Conservation Trust – After over a decade of fundraising and a year of refurbishment, Birmingham Conservation Trust are delighted to be opening to the public the Newman Brothers factory at the Coffin Works, Jewellery Quarter, from late October 2014. This fantastic grade II* listed factory which made coffin furniture for over 100 years, will offer visitors the extraordinary opportunity to ‘step back in time’ and experience the factory as a ‘time-capsule’, set in the 1960s; full of original stock and machinery and with many a tale to tell!
