Church of England – Cathedral and Church Buildings Work Experience

The Cathedral and Church Buildings (CCB) Division team are offering two students or recent graduates the opportunity to work within a multidisciplinary team of experts advising on the conservation and adaptation of ecclesiastical buildings.

Those placed in this work experience scheme are given a unique opportunity to gain an understanding of how the Church of England cares for its 16,000 churches and 42 cathedrals, 12,500 of which have listed status.

The Division are looking for hard working and enthusiastic individuals who are willing to take a hands-on approach to a range of duties within the Division. In return candidates will be introduced to the different strands of the Divisions work and have the opportunity to shadow staff on casework and in other meetings. Candidates should ideally be able to commit to a period of 8 weeks over the summer but a shorter placement may also be possible.

Icon – Internships and Placements

Icon, the Institute of Conservation is pleased to announce twelve new internships of 12 months beginning in October 2013, eight of which are funded by HLF and the remaining for by PZ Conservation, National Trust for Scotland (Bute), Fitzwilliam Museum – Cambridge and Historic Royal Palaces – London.

Subjects include Medieval manuscripts conservation, Ceramic and Glass, Preventive Conservation, Books and Archive materials, Time based media, Digital Preservation and Textiles. Applicants must be able to demonstrate eligibility to live and work in the UK for the duration of this placement.

Deadline for applications starts 2 June 2013.

War Memorials Trust – Placements

War Memorials Trust, the charity working to conserve war memorials across the UK, is looking for volunteers to support its Conservation Team: a condition survey volunteer and a support volunteer for the Conservation Officer in Scotland. Both roles are based in the Trust’s London office, near Victoria Station.

The condition survey volunteer will prioritise the surveys received from memorial custodians and the public. The support volunteer will make information about Scottish war memorials held at the London office available to the Conservation Officer in Scotland. Both roles will also involve contributing to War Memorials Onlineand researching the history of memorials for listing applications.

These roles offer the opportunity to help the preservation of the UK’s unique war memorial heritage, to learn about the conservation of a vast diversity of historic structures and contribute to the commemoration of the First World War centenary.

GCHT – Architectural Heritage Conservation & Regeneration Prize

Glasgow is internationally renowned for the creative and successful conservation and regeneration of historic buildings. Glasgow City Heritage Trust award a £500 prize for a final-year project at both Strathclyde University and Glasgow School of Art relating to architectural heritage conservation & regeneration, to promote continuing best practice and creativity in this area.

The Heritage Canada Foundation – National Awards Program

The Heritage Canada Foundation believes that historic places are the cornerstones of community, identity and sense of place. The National Awards Program recognizes individuals, organizations, corporations and rehabilitation projects that give new life to Canada’s historic places. HCF’s awards are presented at a ceremony held in conjunction with our annual conference. Selections are made by independent juries whose members represent, on a broad basis, the regions of Canada, the various disciplines relating to heritage conservation, and the voluntary heritage movement.

Sussex Heritage Trust Awards

The annual Sussex Heritage Trust Awards are designed to recognise and reward high quality conservation, restoration and good design of newly built projects and encourage the use of traditional skills and crafts.

A wide variety of projects have received Awards including large country houses conver ted into luxury apar tments; a redundant water pumping station, a water mill and windmill, barns, oasts, and outbuildings all saved from dereliction and transformed into homes and offices; restored and re ordered churches and spires; reclaimed and restored gardens and even dovecotes; together with new and contemporary homes, ar t galleries, museums and theatres.

The Building Crafts Award and the Sussex Heritage Person of the Year Awards are presented to individuals rather than projects.

Thesaurus Poloniae

Thesaurus Poloniae is a three-month-long Fellowship of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland implemented by the International Cultural Centre in Krakow.

The programme is addressed to non-residents of Poland who conduct their research on culture, history and multicultural heritage of the Republic of Poland as well as on Central Europe. Both the researchers who deal with practical aspects of management and protection of cultural heritage, and theorists dealing with history, sociology, ethnography, anthropology etc. are welcome to apply and participate in the programme.

CBA – Community Archaeology Bursaries

The Council for British Archaeology (CBA) Community Archaeology Bursaries Project is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund through its Skills for the Future programme, with additional support from English Heritage, Cadw and Historic Scotland. The project is enabling the CBA to offer year-long workplace learning bursaries designed to equip would-be community archaeologists with the skills, experience and confidence to work with voluntary groups and communities.

Construction Youth Trust searches for rising stars of the industry

The Scheme is intended to promote the construction industry to young people of all social backgrounds and, as a result, increase the number and diversity of entrants into the sector.

Skills for the Future Bursary
We know that one of the biggest barriers to training or re-training is cost – it’s often difficult for an individual to fulfil their potential or get the experience and qualifications they need if they have to pay for it themselves.

At the National Heritage Training Group we’re determined not to let funding stand in the way of personal development, and that means we’ll do everything we can to help our trainees with a tax-free bursary of up to £1,000 per month, payable for up to 12 months.

For many trainees this bursary makes the difference between following their dream or staying in a job they don’t enjoy, or it can provide a liveable income if you’re currently unemployed. We can also often help with funding for some of the specialist tools your training might involve.

Structural Carpentry placements at McCurdy and Co
We hope that the Building Traditional Skills bursary funded training opportunities might be of interest to current or recently past carpentry students who wish to advance their training in structural carpentry.

The placements are initially at McCurdy and Co workshops in Berkshire and then on the Jacobean Wannamaker theatre adjacent to the Globe in Southwark, London.

The Building Crafts College

London & South East

The National Heritage Training Group’s (NHTG) bursary scheme is all about finding passionate, enthusiastic and dedicated people to be trained to work on England’s traditional buildings.

Funded by the largest single amount awarded by the Heritage Lottery Fund’s ‘Skills for the Future’ programme, the NHTG bursary scheme will provide high-quality work-based training and skills development opportunities throughout England to prepare participants for a career in the built heritage sector. The programme supports organisations across the UK to help them create heritage training placement opportunities.

Overall, there will be 60 variable-length educational bursaries offered, working on live heritage sites across England. The bursaries are being organised across the country by regional heritage coordinators.

The Building Crafts College is the regional heritage coordinator for London and the South East and advertises placements for the bursary programme once they become available.

INTACH-UK Trust

INTACH-UK Trust (Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage, UK) offers travel scholarships to India for UK citizens. ICOMOS-UK manages these grants on behalf of INTACH-UK. The grants are for educational study visits to India in the field of art and cultural heritage. The aim is to allow UK citizens to undertake research and gain professional experience through projects or work placements. Most grants are awarded to professionals in the early stages of their career, or to students. Senior travel grants are also available.
